Time to punch lots of little holes. 7,470,540 holes in the greens alone to be exact. I love this time of the year. :)

A new bird dog!
A new bird dog is coming. A new addition to the maintenance crew is coming in three weeks. I hope to have her trained and ready to start chasing geese for next summer. Her name TBA in three weeks. Email me some names that would make a great name for a female golf course dog!
Fall 2012
Fall 2012
Well here we are its now officially the fall season. That means a lot of things for us. We start to shift gears a little and change our focus from just keeping things alive in the summer months to
#13tee during construction. It is wider, longer and flatter.
Well here we are its now officially the fall season. That means a lot of things for us. We start to shift gears a little and change our focus from just keeping things alive in the summer months to
making big
improvements. Improvements that almost everyone will notice. Projects
like adding drainage, leveling tees, tree removal, turf over seeding,
etc. This time of the year we are coming into the best course
conditions. We typically don’t water as much so the course plays firmer.
The greens will start speeding up.
September 24th We are starting to re construct #13 tee finally. Everything is set, we have our tractor repaired and am ready to go. When completed it should play like a new hole. It will be longer for everyone especially the blue and white tees. It will have a different lower height( no I’m not meaning height from one of the multiple levels it currently has). I will be shifting the tee to the left. That will give a better angle to shots being hit into the green and you should be able to see more of the greens surface.
Some of you have noticed some dead or declining trees being removed. We have removed the large Blue Oak on #1 that was dead. I will altering the fairway routing to incorporate that area once we take care of the stump. We have also removed several trees that where diseased and dropping branches. We did this because of the safety hazard that they produce.
This year so far has been a great year turf wise. We have had significantly less fungus on the greens and have had a good year growing the Bermuda. The only thing that I have not been pleased with is the crab grass pressure this year. It’s the worst that I have ever seen in working on courses for almost 20 years now. The only thing I can attribute the increased pressure this year is the odd springs we are having. Things seem to be blooming and emerging earlier that in past seasons. Next year I am taking corrective action and an switching to a different preemergant that should help keep it at bay.
Some of you know that we lost our golf course gooser Daisy, my Chocolate Labrador. Daisy was a fixture around here for the last 6 years chasing everything. She was 10years old and unfortunately developed a tumor on her spine that produced a herniated disc and several pinched nerves that was not operable. She was the best bird dog that I have ever had. I look at it as she has had 4x the life as most labs where she had 120 acres to roam and plenty of friends to give her attention. She had a great life and will be missed. Sooner or later we will have a new addition to the maintenance staff that you will be able to see grow up on the course.
If you ever want to know what’s currently going on check the golf course blog or check us on us on Facebook or contact us directly.

That’s all for now keep hitting them straight and in the short grass!

Changes are a good thing!
I am making some rather drastic changes for this summers playing conditions. I decided to do something that i did not think we were going ready to do yet. The course is at a place, turf health wise that I am lowering the height of cut (HOC). The Tees, Collars, Fairways will all be mowed at .50 inches. The Greens are going from a height of .140 to .130. My goal by the end of summer is to get down to .120. Why the changes you ask? The answer is two reasons. 1st is to provide better playing conditions by having tighter shorter turf that is easier to hit off of, faster surfaces, and provides more roll. The 2nd is making the course look the best it can by visually giving the fairways, tees, collars more definition. The difference between the HOC of those areas and the rough really gives the course an element of shape.
We will be starting a renovation of Tee 13 by mid July. We will start it after we host several County tournaments and get a few pieces of equipment ready. I will be adding another 25 yards to the hole by moving the tee all the way back to the fence for a total yardage of 150 yards +or -. We will also start working on the other bridges and abutments through the rest of the year.
We experienced a loss on the maintenance crew in the month of June. Manuel Reyes was robbed and severely beaten on May 25th. He was in the hospital in a coma with major head injuries from being beaten. On June 8th Manuel passed away. He was 63 years old and only 6 months away from his retirement. Manuel was one of my best employees that always had a smile on his face. He will be missed greatly. If you would like to make a donation to help his family pay for the cost of the funeral services and medical care please contact me.

New Fairway Shaping
This is something I'm starting to do again. Every couple of years I re paint the shape and routing of the fairways. Ideally as time goes by the cut changes by mowers creeping in and out. Certain areas shrink and expand. This is my time to refresh things. This year I going to bring the bunkers into play by cutting the fairway and collar cut closer to the bunkers. Doing this with changing the routing presents a fresh look and some new elements to the golf round as you are playing.
